Citadel of the Ho Dynasty
Citadel of the Ho Dynasty (also known as Tay Do citadel, An Ton citadel, Tay Kinh citadel or Tay Giai citadel) is the capital of Dai Ngu (Vietnam’s national name in the Ho Dynasty), located in Vinh Loc district, Thanh Hoa province, built by Ho Quy Ly in 1397. The stone slabs on the archway are chiseled in the shape of pomelos, closely stacked on top of each other.
The money gate (south gate) is the main gate, with three doors. The middle door is 5,82 m wide, 5,75 m high, the two side doors are 5,45 m wide and 5,35 m high. The other three gates have only one door. The average height of the city wall is 5-6 m, the highest place is the 10 m high money gate. Connecting to the South gate is the stone-paved Hoa Nhai road (Royal Road) about 2,5 km long towards the Nam Giao altar (where the king sacrificed) built in August 8.
The entire wall and four main gates are built with blue limestone slabs, finely hewn, square, and stacked tightly on top of each other. The average stone slabs are 1,5 m long, some are up to 6 m long, and weigh 24 tons. The total volume of stone used to build is about 20.000 m3 and nearly 100.000 m3 of earth is elaborately dug and filled.
